Element1 Mobile Refuller Deployed

Mar 31, 2025

The team have now achieved their goals for the Element 1 project.

The project has successfully completed its final important milestone with the deployment of the mobile hydrogen refueller, HyTANKa®. This unique vehicle enables hydrogen to be delivered in a safe and efficient manner to the modified excavators on the job site.

This deployment is the final example of how hydrogen can be a real alternative fuel for construction plant. The team have already deployed two different fuel storage and dispensing solutions, one at Manchester using Multi element Gas Containers (MEGCs) and a HyQube dispenser all powered with a Hydrogen Power Unit, so completely off grid. The second solution, using Manifolded Cylinder Pallets (MCPs) was deployed at Brighouse and Ravensthorpe whilst the final certification was achieved for HyTANKa.

Previously the team had deployed four modified excavators on three construction sites across the north of England. The machines have been modified to run on a dual fuel solution of hydrogen and diesel. The hydrogen, injected directly into the engine, displaces a significant proportion of diesel resulting in improved exhaust emissions with no drop off in performance of the machines.
